Puppy Nipping Tips
Puppies tend to nip when they’re overly excited or trying to communicate with you. Nipping is a very normal puppy behavior that almost every puppy exhibits. Since they cannot talk or grab you, nipping is their way of getting your attention.
First of all, behavior where the puppy is mouthing your skin should never be encouraged. This includes games such as rough play.
Your puppy needs to know that putting their mouth on you is not a form of acceptable play. Instead you should encourage the use of toys. You can redirect the puppy’s behavior by throwing a toy or playing tug of war with them.
Sometimes it is best to ignore the play biting by getting up and walking away.
If the biting is not stopping you can take the puppy by the scruff on the back of their neck and firmly tell them no.
The important thing here is to be consistent. Your puppy needs to know that nipping is never an acceptable way to receive your attention.
