Successful Potty Training Tips
Successful House training tips
Housetraining your puppy doesn’t have to be difficult. Here’s some tips to help it go smoothly.
A puppy can only hold their urine for a few hours at a time so be prepared to take your puppy outside every 2-3 hours.
-Be aware of your puppy’s body language when they have to go potty. They will usually start sniffing around, pacing with their noses to the ground, or whining. Be sure to bring them outside as soon as you see any of these signs.
- Do NOT leave water out all day for your puppy. Only give water during meals and immediately following playtime.
- Leave food and water out for no more than 20 minutes at a time. After 20 minutes of them not eating put it away.
- When outside make sure the puppy is on a leash. Do not let the puppy free roam the yard.
- After the puppy eliminates reward them with a treat while also praising them verbally (“Good potty!”).
-Keep a chart listing drinking and eating times with eliminations.
-When releasing a puppy from their crate immediately let them outside to potty.
- If you catch the puppy eliminating startle them by saying no and immediately put them outside, even if they’ve already finished.
- Do not reprimand the puppy after they’ve eliminated. This will just teach them to hide from you next time.
